Why Bark Off? Why now?

Dog ownership in the UK has increased by an incredible 40% in the last year! This means that a third of children in your school now have a dog. It has never been more important to raise awareness of what dogs need to be happy and healthy, and how children should safely interact with dogs.

We created the Great British Bark Off to bring greater awareness of how children can safely live and thrive with dogs.

Did you know?

  • That the UK dog population increased by 3.5 million dogs in the last year.

  • That over 1 in 3 homes now have a dog.

  • This means, that over 80% of children in your school will know friends and family with dogs.

  • As lockdown eases, children will be more exposed to dogs in parks and homes, then ever before.

What is the Great British Bark Off?

The Great British Bark Off is a week-long education and fundraising campaign, all about dogs. The Bark Off runs from 14 June and culminates in the Big Bark & Bake Day on Friday 18 June. Get involved and take part in:

  • Learning – An education pack full of activities and information will show children how to treat dogs and how to safely behave around them.

  • Fundraising – With a little bit of help from 11-year-old Junior Bake Off baker, Fyn and Stampy Cat & Sqaishey, children across the UK will raise some ‘dough for dogs’ like Birdie featured below.

  • Fun – with dog-themed games, competitions, and activities.

Birdie is one of the hundreds of dogs rescued from a life of misery by Underdog International. We work across the globe bringing therapy dogs into schools, running dog rescue schemes and managing animal welfare projects. Our motto is ‘Children helping dogs. Dogs helping children’ and we aim to positively impact one million children and dogs by 2025.
