Gertie’s story

Gertie came to us from Romania back in July 2020. Back when lockdown started and working from home became popular my partner Steven and I decided we would really love a dog. We were having a BBQ with a couple of friends and we mentioned to them we were thinking of getting a dog. The next day my friend messaged to see if I would ever consider rescuing. I thought oh I would love to but I have no experience so wasn’t sure if I would be considered. She sent me the Underdog website and I saw Gertie and I was madly in love. I read her story and was in tears and just knew she was the dog for us. 

Within an hour I had completed the adoption form and Eve had been in touch to say she would love to consider us. We paid the deposit there and then and we were told Leanne would be in touch to do a house inspection. We were so excited and couldn’t believe it. 

Fast forward a month and Gertie was on her way to Glasgow. She arrived around half past midnight and as soon as she came in she demolished her dinner and was looking for more. After that she came straight into our bedroom and lay on her new blanket and fell asleep. She adapted to home life very quickly and we just couldn’t imagine life without her. We couldn’t have asked for a better best friend. She quickly became the boss of the house. She has learnt the word ‘bye’ and when I say ‘bye’ on a work call she’s up to check if I’ve finished and it’s time to play. It has been amazing to watch her grow and see her personality come out. She loves her belly rubs and if you stop she isn’t long in telling you to keep going. 

At first when she arrived she didn’t bother much with her toys but now she loves nothing more than to destroy a squeaky toy. She chases after her ball and even plays tug of war. Everyone that meets Gertie just adores her. If I were to describe her in one word it would be ‘Angel’. 

Underdog have been amazing throughout the whole process. They kept me up to date when Gertie was travelling and have checked in several times since to see how things are going. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to rescue and we couldn’t possibly thank them enough for bringing Gertie into our lives. 

Steven and I are currently in progress of relocating to Southampton. Once we are settled, if (and only if!) we get Gertie’s approval we may be in touch with Eve to see about getting Gertie a younger/older brother or sister.
