Henry’s story
We, like probably many of you, had been looking through the Underdog website for a few months, and when Henry appeared for the first time, it was almost an instantaneous connection. Within ten minutes of googling about English Pointers (we knew LITERALLY nothing about them), we had sent an application to Eve and we were already busy rearranging our living room furniture to accommodate Henry in to our lives.
As a first-time dog owner, I was a little nervous, but I cannot understate how great the Underdog team is in rehoming the dogs in their care. They genuinely care about each and every dog. They take in to account your needs in great detail, with a comprehensive background and home check, and most importantly, understand the needs of their dogs. In Henry’s case, we were a perfect fit for what he needed.
We picked Henry up in July 2022, and what arrived in our home was the most curious, adventurous and confident dog I’ve ever seen, an absolute world away to what I was expecting after 24 hours of travelling in a crate to location unknown. The Underdog team warned us to take it slow, to let him adapt to his surroundings slowly, but Henry was so damn curious, he just wanted to explore everything; so, we let him!
It's not all sunshine and rainbows I have to admit, and the first few weeks are particularly challenging. Despite his confidence, there were occasional moments of uncertainty. We had a few accidents on carpets, a few chewed up flip flops, three new TV remotes and a few nights of crying and howling but since then, he’s developed in to the most sweet, loving boy we could have asked for.
Henry absolutely loves people; he’ll try and jump on my grandma’s lap (I don’t think he understands how large he really is), he will play relentlessly with my four-year-old cousin, and he’s on a mission to convert my dad, who isn’t really a dog person; and I think he’s succeeding…
If you’re considering adopting, I cannot recommend it enough from our experience. The feeling of seeing a dog that’s had such a troubled past be genuinely happy and content is indescribable, and we’re so lucky to have Henry in our lives.
