Mabel’s story
We adopted Mabel in October 2020 where she had flown all the way over from Cyprus after spending several weeks with her wonderful foster mum, Helen. We had seen that Mabel (then Snowy) needed a home through an email from Underdog: amongst the many doggy emails which flood Katie’s inbox, the time was right and we instantly knew we’d be able to give her a perfect home.
When Mabel arrived she was quiet, timid and although we could tell she was a little overwhelmed, she was ever so trusting of us and it brought many a tear to our eyes with how brave she was in her strides to accept and offer affection as well as begin to make herself at home right from the first day. She got used to sleeping alone in the lounge fairly quickly and now will happily settle down for the night. She was slightly afraid of being put on a lead at first and there was little desire to play, although Mabel’s development over the first few weeks and up to today (9-months later) has been phenomenal and she has completely embraced life in the UK to its fullest.
People frequently stop to say how beautiful and happy she is and to ask ‘what is she?’! We’re so proud of her in how far she’s come. For such small legs she loves an adventure, although won’t say no to a free ride if offered! In her nine months in the UK she has climbed mountains and paddled at the beach. Zoomies and playing ball once we hear one of our favourite words, ‘Outside!’ – second only to ‘Chicken!’ – are one of life’s many pleasures for Mabel. She has great character and charisma, although she rarely makes a sound. She can be a little territorial of us and can feel threatened by larger dogs, but these are things we are working on and she is making great progress. Mabel is the sweetest dog, she likes nothing better than to cuddle up with you when you’re settled down and the love she has to give is endless.
Adopting Mabel was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made and it’s ever so rewarding to see her living her best life and so full of confidence when compared to how she was prior to rescue.
We’re ever so grateful to Underdog International who were brilliant throughout the process and very supportive (shout out to Eve and Stef) - when we look to rescue again we will undoubtedly look to Underdog first. We’re also greatly appreciative of Mabel’s foster mum Helen who took the time to communicate with us prior to her rescue, send us pictures and generally let us get to know her virtually before we got her. All should be so proud in what they’ve contributed to Mabel’s happiness because to us it is priceless.
