Peggy’s story
One evening in early 2020, my partner had just admitted to me that she had in fact adopted Peggy, not fostered, and she was off to Cobham services to pick up the newest member of our pack and little sister to our first rescue, old-girl Luna. Ferne had been in contact with Eve via Instagram about little Peggy, sending photos and videos of her, asking the important questions to ensure that she had the answers to all of the questions I had to try and catch her out for not being prepared enough for a second dog to come home! Although feeling slightly apprehensive as I drove home from work that night, Peggy had already made herself at home in her sister's bed, and made her ‘mark’ on our back room floor, but greeted me excitedly at the front door as if she’d known me forever.
We were both shocked at how quickly Peggy seemed to settle and work her way into our routine. Our first rescue Luna was heartbreakingly shut-down when we brought her home, and it took us well over 6 months for her to make it past the front door, let alone enjoy a proper walk. Peggy on the other hand could not wait to get outside and explore! She is cheeky, curious and a proven escape artist! Apparently our neighbours’ gardens are much more interesting than our own… Peggy is eager to please so training the basics like ‘sit’ and ‘no’ have been easy to teach her, but we’ve yet to perfect her recall - the outside world is just too exciting and must be explored at lightning speed! The spaniel in her means she herds us up eventually, we just need to work on making the circles she runs around us just that little bit smaller.
We’ve learned during lockdown that Peggy loves human company; she would choose being cuddled up on the sofa with her Mums or Grandma over any playtime with other dogs. That said, she and Luna get on exceptionally well. Luna has taught Pegs how to chill and really get those 18+ plus hours of sleep each day, and Peggy has taught Luna how to play with toys, charge around the garden and get overly excited at mealtimes. Peggy has her very own excited dance involving spins, leaps and some very intricate footwork before she’s ready to sit nicely before her dinner.
Even though she’s a handful sometimes, we have no regrets from bringing Peggy into our pack. We want to thank Eve and all the team at Underdog for their hard work in giving Pegs, and so many other dogs their best lives. Peggy is living hers for sure!
