Rosie and Oliver’s story
We adopted Rosie and Oliver in July 2021 and we can hardly believe it’s been two years since we met them. They had been staying with their fosterer, Tim, in Dundee for two months and a mutual friend of ours had shared a picture of them on Instagram when they were ready for adoption. We weren’t aware of Underdog before then but had been looking for a rescue pup for a while so it seemed very serendipitous to stumble across their photos this way. They were advertised as a bonded pair, Rosie is Oliver’s mum, so the idea of adopting not just one but two pups took a bit of mulling over but their little cheeky faces were hard to resist.
We had Milli, our old lady Jack Russell, at home and were concerned how the guys might react to her so we arranged with Tim to meet Rosie and Oliver in a local park. There was no issues with Milli and we instantly fell in love with them so we contacted Eve at Underdog to go through the process of adopting them both. The process was so quick and went really smoothly. We have even kept in touch with Tim and he visits the guys every now and again.
The first few weeks were quite tough, particularly with Oliver who can be quite needy, and on walks they were overexcited, straining and pulling on their leads. It’s taken quite a bit of training to get them to listen to commands and even now they have selective hearing. We were advised to keep them separate from Milli when we weren’t home, which wasn’t very often as we both work from home, but we installed a couple of baby gates, which Oliver eventually worked out how to open! Sadly Milli is no longer with us but we think the guys encouraged her to keep going for another year.
Rosie somehow managed to puncture her saliva gland last year and the salivary mucocele surgery cost a lot but we scraped the money together as it was so important to us that she was comfortable and happy. She was a trooper and bounced back better than ever in no time.
They are both great with people and want to be everyone’s friend but Rosie can be very reactive to other dogs, barking and growling at them, then Oliver joins in too, so it’s still a work in progress trying to stop that. At the beginning Oliver would get carsick almost every time. We thought maybe it was anxiety after the long journey from Cyprus but we’ve had more than a year carsick free so we think that he now associates the car with fun times!
Adopting Rosie and Oliver was the best decision ever. They bring so much love and joy to our lives as well as a healthy routine. We go on so many adventures together, visit places that we wouldn’t have gone to without them. Yes, Rosie can be sassy and grumpy but she is also the sweetest and Oliver is always up to mischief but he’s so dopey and loving. We can’t imagine life without them.
