Sammy’s story
Sammy arrived in the UK from Cyprus on 1st October 2019, when he was 6 months old, hoping to find his forever home. We were able to offer him a temporary home in London whilst his quest continued. However, after three weeks Sammy had passed his foster process with flying colours, as we completely fell in love with his loving and inquisitive personality, and offered him a forever home with us.
Sammy was initially shy and appreciated his comfy crate to have a safe place whilst he adjusted to life in his new home. However, with the help of an unknown number of tasty chicken treats, it wasn’t long before he couldn’t resist cuddles on the sofa, rummaging through the laundry basket and making friends with every dog and human he met on his adventures.
After a few months of training Sammy was doing really well, but true to his strong headed hound nature, some aspects were harder than others to accomplish - namely recall. Persistence was key with this one and although we are always working on it, Sammy is ‘off the lead’ in most scenarios. This has definitely made walks more enjoyable for him and us, but patience has been important.
Underdog International were incredibly supportive throughout the process, ensuring that Sammy was settling in well, but also that we were comfortable and could ask as many questions as we needed. There was never any stage that we didn’t feel supported and always had clarity on the fostering/adoption process.
We can’t imagine our life without Sammy. Although it was a leap of faith welcoming a dog into our home that we hadn’t met, all it takes is patience and love to make it work. We had very little to no traction with rescue centres in the UK just because we lived in a London flat. Our experience with Underdog couldn’t have been further from that. We can’t recommend them enough.
