About Larry

Larry has been in the shelter for a while. He was found on the street by a lady who kindly brought him into the shelter in the hope he might be able to find a home, but so far he’s not been so lucky. Larry is a two year old Labrador mix and is a typical Lab sort of size at around 25kg. He’s a friendly, happy go lucky and sociable boy with a confident and trusting nature.

Larry is very friendly with everyone he meets and is definitely a human oriented dog. He loves the company of people, probably more so than that of other dogs, and he relishes any opportunity to be fussed over and enjoy being the centre of attention. He is good tempered, gentle and well behaved, and his eagerness to please make us think at some point he was lucky enough to have a family. He is highly trainable and really keen to learn.

Despite Larry looking so shiny and healthy, routine blood tests detected that he was unfortunately positive for Leishmania. He has had preliminary treatment and his condition is stable and his levels considered to be low, but he will need ongoing tablets each day and routine blood-work to monitor him. Leish is a long term health condition caused by the bite of an infected sandfly. It is not transferrable to other dogs in the UK as our weather is too cold for the sandfly to survive. Leishmania can be managed successfully and dogs go on to live a happy, healthy life.

Larry is great with other dogs and currently shares his kennel with a young female who he gets on well with. He walks nicely alongside other dogs when out with the volunteers, and his lead training has come on amazingly well. He rarely pulls and he walks very nicely. Larry could live with other dogs, but wouldn’t bat an eyelid at being the only resident dog in the household either. He’s confident enough to be homed on his own.

Larry could definitely live with children and loves all the fuss they give him! He knows to be patient and gentle in the company, and resists the urge to jump up or get too over-excited as best he can. We think he would be a good addition to a home with children aged 5+, or perhaps younger if they already have some experience living with medium sized dogs. Larry hasn’t been properly exposed to cats but when he’s come across them on walks he’s not strained to go near them and hasn’t appeared to be interested. It may be a different story around skittish cats who run past him, so we’d say if any cats are in the household they must be confident and dog-savvy.

Larry is looking for a moderately active family home with lots of fuss and attention. He would prefer a home with direct access to a secure garden, some basic training, and an understanding of his ongoing medical needs. Whilst Leishmania should not mean Larry never gets a chance at happiness, it’s also an important factor to consider. We’d love to see Larry get the family he deserves and we know he will be such a loyal companion given the opportunity.

Larry is currently based in Cyprus and has an otherwise clean bill of health. He is ready to travel once he finds his forever home.

Please note, any mention of breed is nothing more than an educated guess based on what we know about the dog, their appearance, behaviour, and common breeds in their country of origin. We can never guarantee breed specifics, nor can we confirm the exact age of our dogs, unless they were born in our care. Age estimations are made by our vets based on the development of the dog, their general health and energy, and assessing their teeth.
