Frankie’s story
For as long as I can remember, my life has revolved around dogs. Growing up I shared my life with dogs, big and small, and based my career around them. Life just wasn’t complete without a dog (or two!).
When our daughter was a few years old, we decided it was the right time to adopt another dog to join our family, and I wanted her to grow up with a furry best friend like I did. Our resident dog was beginning to slow down with age, and was also becoming quite lonely. Unfortunately, every rescue we tried rejected us in an instant due to us having a young child, without giving us a chance. We had just about given up hope, until I was introduced to Underdog via SHS on Instagram. I applied and was expecting rejection, when one day I received an email from Eve explaining she had a little dog who sounded ideal for us. At the bottom of the email was a photo of a little dog called Frankie, with the most gorgeous crimped ears and cheeky face – I fell in love instantly. Fast-forward a month and our family was complete at last.
We had anticipated that the first few weeks (or months) would be a challenge, and we had prepared ourselves for it to be a bumpy road. Thankfully Frankie settled in instantly, and the only ‘challenge’ we faced was coping with his constant need for attention (goodbye relaxing cups of tea on the sofa!) Him and our older dog Elsa are inseparable, and he has given her a new lease of life. Elsa is a puppy again, and playtime between them is all day every day (mostly when we are trying to relax though!)
Every morning starts with a parade around the house with Frankie’s favourite giraffe toy in his mouth, followed by a long walk by the fields where all the zoomies happen! His tail NEVER stops wagging, we always joke that it will fall off one of these days because it never ever stops.
Frankie is still wary of strangers, especially men, but that is something we have accepted and we make a conscious effort to avoid situations where he feels nervous. He is very food orientated, most likely due to him fending for himself for a while, so we have to be extra careful with food – unfortunately he has already had two vet visits for eating things he shouldn’t have, because he can jump on the kitchen counter!
In a nutshell, he is perfect. He is everything you could want in a rescue dog – loyal, affectionate, grateful and just in love with life. My heart is close to bursting with love for him, and I cannot thank Underdog enough for introducing Frankie to our lives and making our family complete and full of joy.
