Alfie’s story

After growing up with dogs, I always knew I wanted to have a dog of my very own. I had been following Underdog for some time and finally decided to express interest in adopting. After filling in a form, it was only a couple of weeks before I woke up one day to a WhatsApp from Eve with pictures of a tiny six month old puppy in Cyprus that needed adopting urgently.

Alfie, at the time called Lucky, was so tiny and just had the cheekiest little face. Immediately I said I was interested and after a few background checks, he was on the plane from Cyprus to Belgium and then onward to the UK with a pet courier. I’ll never forget picking him up from the checkpoint, he was so tiny and so scared; shaking and drooling. On the car ride home he sat on my lap and just stared up at me. It was definitely love at first sight.

Fast forward 18 months, Alfie is about to turn two and lives a very happy life in North London. While there have been some rocky moments with separation anxiety and nervousness around strangers, Alfie has made amazing progress with the help I made sure I had on hand early, from trainers and behaviourists. Alfie was dumped in a field as a tiny new born with his deceased sibling, and I knew he (and I) would need this extra support for a smooth introduction to his new life. Underdog were also amazing with the check ins and ability to contact them for support if needed (thank you, Holly!)

Alfie loves cuddles and will jump on any spare lap he sees. He is very cheeky and makes me laugh every day. He happily goes to doggie daycare, to the office, on the tube, to the pub, and loves a good run around on the Heath or Primrose Hill.

When I first started looking for a dog, I considered both breeders and rescues. In all honesty, I was nervous to adopt a dog I’d never met, who’s background I only knew very limited information. Underdog made the whole process and experience seamless and were supportive, honest and set realistic expectations about what Alfie would need from the beginning. I now can’t imagine my life without him and am so grateful everyday that he is with me.
