Lexi’s story
I’m sure fate brought Lexi and I together. I was only just considering a second dog when I stumbled across Underdog via Facebook, but the moment I saw her picture and read her story I knew that I had to apply! When I enquired, she already had a family interested in her but their situation changed and luckily I made it to the top of the list. I had to wait for Lexi to find a flight due to COVID but Eve worked her magic and after three months Lexi was on the first flight to Germany from Cyprus and arrived in the UK. A huge ordeal for a young pup, a very nervous Lexi was placed into my arms on 4th July 2020 and we have been bonded to each other ever since!
Lexi was very quiet and shell shocked for the first week - she didn’t understand lead walks and would pee when scared. Luckily we were staying at my parents small holding with lots of fields to run around - my Tilly dog and my parents’ dog Jilly stepped in and gentle tail wags turned to joyous zoomies within a week!
It’s been two years since Lexi arrived in the UK and writing this I realise how much she has grown in confidence. Lots of socialisation from the offset with my friends and their dogs, time and understanding has been key to her success. There have been plenty of challenges - she has some separation anxiety and terrible teeth which have already had to be cleaned twice and three removed. She would hide under the car like the day she was found by the kind man in Cyprus but thankfully it doesn’t take half an hour to coax her out. Sadly, my Tilly passed away last year and both Lexi and I were so lost without her - she wasn’t ready to be an only dog. A few months later we adopted Bo Peep - Lexi took such good care of “her puppy” and has helped raise the little terror showing what a big heart she has!
Lexi is a beautiful, loyal, loving, playful and very funny little dog. Everyone who spends time with her falls in love and she loves them and will “sing” to them when she hasn’t seen them for a while! She has a repertoire of tricks from “sit pretty” to “belly crawls”. She loves zoomies with her dog friends, leaping through long grass like a gazelle, playing rough n tumble with “her puppy” and charging through the bunkers of the local golf course with an infectious joie de vivre! I consider myself so lucky to have adopted Lexi and cannot imagine my life without her now. Huge thanks to Underdog for entrusting me with such a precious soul.
If you are thinking of adopting a rescue from overseas, it’s a big commitment but my advice is to be honest with the team about the right type and personality that will fit in your life/home and trust them to find the best match for you and the dog. They give you a good idea of what to expect in the early days and will support you with any challenges along the way - overcoming these will only make your bond stronger. Underdog genuinely care and remember all of the dogs they have helped find fur-ever homes. I have no doubts I have their support throughout Lexi’s life!
