Loumi’s story

Adopting a rescue dog is without doubt the best decision I have made in the last decade!

One of the people I follow on Instagram regularly reposts Underdog on his stories, (I later learned he had adopted Finn, one of the other success stories here), so when I first started thinking about adopting a rescue dog, naturally this was one of the websites I looked at.

Almost immediately I saw this gorgeous looking girl with the big ears. She looked so pretty I figured she would be adopted very quickly so I moved on and did my research with probably a dozen other rescue associations. But I always made time to check back on theunderdog.org.

Weeks went by and she was still there. I couldn’t understand how this beautiful looking dog could still not have been adopted.

So I plucked up my courage and sent a message “Is she still available?”
I still remember the thrill of excitement when Eve got back to me and said “Yes she is.”

Messages were exchanged, home assessments done, fees paid, and then suddenly we were on our way to pick her up from the fosters. In that time I learned that she was almost three years old and had spent 2 1/2 of those years in the shelter where she had been born (her mum was pregnant when she came in). How could anyone not love this gorgeous girl for so long? It must have been fate because in the seven months she has been part of my life she has stolen my heart completely.

Loumi has an amazing personality. She is still a bit nervous, she particularly doesn’t like fireworks or any other sudden loud noise. But she is so placid, totally fine with other dogs, children, crowds, even traffic noise. She loves to be outside, nosing around in the woods or on the beach. The first time we went to the beach at Scarborough she tried to jump a rock-pool that was far too big for her and got completely soaked (she’s definitely not a swimmer).

At home she is very relaxed and immediately claimed the sofa as her own. She has become my shadow, always by my side wherever we go. She is a joy to walk both on lead and off. Her recall is excellent. I can’t claim credit for that but I was able to let her off lead after only a week or so. She always comes back when called. She sleeps on the bed, and when sitting on the sofa she loves nothing more than to snuggle up, physical contact is very important to this girl.

She can be funny too. Whenever it’s time to go out, like any dog she is very excited, but when I try to put her harness on she plays this little game of duck and dive, avoiding getting her head through.

I am very grateful to Eve and Leanne and the others for allowing me to take care of this beautiful girl.
