Romy’s story
It has been almost a year since we adopted Romy. As soon as I saw her pictures, the ears!! We fell totally in love and reached out to Eve to see if she was still available and to discuss if we were suitable adopters for her. She was then around 8 months old.
Eve was so quick to get back to us and after that everything moved so smoothly and quickly. Luckily, a last minute space became available on a flight and before we knew it she would be on her way. We had to cut short our holiday but she was totally worth it. I had wanted to get a dog for so long after having one as a child I knew the joy they could give, and she has truly brought so much happiness.
As soon as we picked her up although she looked like a scared Bambi on ice with her tiny frame, big ears and skinny legs she gave me a kiss on the nose and knew all would be ok and we haven’t looked back since.
She settled in straight away and loved her bed, sleeping through the night. She’s a real cuddle monster and loves to curl up next to you on the sofa for snuggles, it’s the best feeling, although with her long legs she tends to take over most of the sofa and we are relegated to the ends. She really is such a character and brings us so much love and laughter every day, she knows how to use her puppy dog eyes and ears to get what she wants!
She still gets nervous sometimes around certain situations but is growing in confidence all the time. She’s still not a big fan of water and will jump over puddles to avoid, and bath time is not her favourite but she gets better each time. It still doesn’t stop her rolling in unmentionable things! We are learning new things all the time. At first, we didn’t think she could bark but eventually as her confidence grew it went from a squeak to what we now call her big dog bark as she sounds much bigger than she is, great to hear her finding her voice.
We think she may be part kangaroo with her jumping and boxing skills and loves to play chase with other dogs, she loves a good run. Her recall is getting better, being totally food obsessed she will do most things for treats but still sometimes goes deaf if she gets the scent of something on a walk - she would make a great sniffer dog! Any rustle of paper or hand in pocket and her head is immediately up waiting for treats. People still ask if she will grow into her ears and we are happy to say no she won’t.
I can’t thank Eve, Leanne and the team at Underdog International enough for bringing her into our lives, for being so supportive and for all the amazing work they do. THANK YOU.
