Trudy’s story
In the immortal words of the Fresh Prince, Trudy’s life got “flipped-turned upside down” on 5th August 2020. The confusion, stress and exhaustion of a long and very hot journey from Cyprus was etched all over her face when we first met her at the service station on the outskirts of London. We vowed to do very little for the first week of Trudy’s life with us and let her settle. She was only 8 months old after all…
Within a week she had decompressed and she spent the remainder of the summer revealing new habits and personality traits on an almost daily basis. She began puppy classes and, despite a trip to the vet for a small problem with her hip, went from strength to strength. We did our best to introduce her to as many different settings and situations as we could and her confidence continued to build.
Once September rolled around though it was time for Trudy’s next big challenge…her first day at school! I work as a PE teacher and Trudy, like our previous dog Rusty, would be spending her days at school with me.
I was nervous, Trudy was still a puppy. How would she cope with kids ranging from 5 years old up to teenagers? The answer was very simple. She loves school! She spends break times playing with children and other staff dogs, enjoys evenings on the sofa in the boarding house and naps the remainder of the day in the PE office with her room-mate Dougie the Labrador.
She may have selective recall and a deep affection for any food belonging to humans, among many other ‘flaws’, but to us she is utterly perfect. Adopting from abroad in the middle of a pandemic may have seemed like a risky or silly thing to do but the support from Underdog is incredible throughout the process and their assessment of what you can offer and what each dog requires is second to none. Thank you Eve and all the team.
