About Sumo

This gorgeous boy is Sumo. He was found roaming as a stray and picked up by the local dog warden before being dropped off at the shelter shortly after. It came as no shock that Sumo was not microchipped, and no one came looking for him. He’s now spent over half a year in the shelter and is often overlooked because he’s a bigger pup, but we’re hopeful that his new beginning is around the corner.

Sumo is around 2-3 years old and is a really beautiful boy. When he first arrived at the shelter he was skinny, his fur was mucky and patchy, and he was covered in sores from poor living. Now, he has a soft white coat, he’s gained weight and he looks super healthy. He also has very expressive ears and lovely gentle eyes. He absolutely loves humans and gets so excited when someone wants to spend some 1-2-1 time with him. He is such a cuddly, affectionate dog and although he is clever and quick to learn new things, there is a definite goofiness about him and it’s lovely to see his silly side come out when he feels comfortable with you.

Sumo is around 30kg and isn’t aware of the fact that he’s not actually a lapdog. He is more than happy to clamber onto you for a snuggle and lean in for strokes - he’s clueless to the fact he’s actually quite big! He is definitely a gentle giant though and is a complete softie. All he wants is love.

Despite Sumo’s limited experience on the lead during his time at the shelter, he’s actually pretty good on walks. He’s a bit excited to start with, naturally, and being a big dog when he pulls he can be strong, but he’s super responsive to redirection and really tries his hardest to listen to his handler. He enjoys being outside, taking in the world around him, and he shows a lot of promise regarding picking up new commands. He’s very food oriented and loves treats as a reward, which will definitely be beneficial for ongoing training in his new home.

Sumo currently shares his kennel with another large male dog, and for the most part the two get on well. Sumo can sometimes get a bit grumbly if his space is not respected by his kennel mate, and he doesn’t like it when his neighbours bark incessantly at his through the fence, but overall he is good with other dogs. He pays no attention to the other dogs barking at him when he walks through the shelter to go outside, and just focuses on whoever is walking him. He tries so hard to please and in a home where he has some focus and attention we think he is going to be amazing.

Sumo could live with or without other dogs. Due to his size we will require his family to have some previous dog experience and be confident handlers, and we’re looking for a home with children aged 10+ (again, purely based on his size). He would like an active home slightly outside the city where it’s a little quieter, and he would also like direct access to a garden. Sumo is a lovely boy and we know he’s going to bring so much fun and happiness into his new forever home.

Sumo is currently based in Cyprus and has a clean bill of health. He is ready to travel once he finds his forever home.
